The Fifth

Vases 3 Hello , now we continue the story of the antic vases from Augustusburg . After receiving the ok for ripping of the paint, finding a company able to shotblast the heavy vases,210 kg with no lid ,with glasperls, turned out to be rather difficult. Glasperls had to be used to avoid roughening the surface of the vases. In the end I was lucky finding the company : Abrasiv Oberflächentechnik Mr. Sinning was very cooperativ and owns, rare for his craft,a nearly dustfree workshop. You find his well made homepage at http://www.oberfläche.com/ After the blasting was done,an immediate conservation of the surface was due. The cast iron with its pure metallic surface reacts with the oxygen of the air right away and was already showing a hint of rust after 24 h. Conservation was done in the traditionell way using red lead priming coat in linseed oil. This provides abasis of optimum elasticity, preventing cracks most securely. To be continued Michael Haase
